how did it feel? were you encouraged to work hard and get a good score again? reinforcement and punishment are two of the factors that affect behavior. it is what makes you want to do things that feel good and not do things that don’t make you feel good. for reinforcement and punishment, there are two types – positive and negative. positive is to add a stimulus – either good or bad feeling. negatively is something that removes a stimulus, which could be good or bad. it is important to remember that positivity and negativity are not referring to good and bad stimuli. they are referring to the presence or the removal or stimuli. reinforcement is a necessary part of shaping our behavior. without it, we wouldn’t do many of the good and important things that we do on a daily basis. however, when reinforcement occurs on something that isn’t very good or could even be harmful, it can be considered an addiction. an addiction is something that is repeatedly positively reinforcing, and is also intrinsically rewarding. many people claim to be addicted to various things in life, and it is often difficult to draw the line between addiction and simply using something often. therefore, addictions require one of two other conditions: negatively affecting the addict’s life or making the addict depend upon the addicting item in question. traditionally speaking, the word addictive could only be applied to substances, but in by this definition it is possible to apply the word “addicting” to a varying degree of actions and activities. for example, joe loves driving his car to work because other alternate methods of transportation simply take too long and his car is very comfortable. however, he failed to get a license, and is therefore risking getting arrested if he is on the road. if he continues to drive under these conditions, his behavior is similar to that of a addicts – his actions are positively reinforcing and also intrinsically rewarding because it is comfortable and enjoyable to drive his car. it is also poses a negative effect towards joe’s life – he is risking fines by driving his car, and possibly being arrested. therefore, in joe’s case driving a car can be considered as an addictive activity. addiction is something that is quite broad and not defined very exactly. different sources give different responses to what something addicting is, such as a medical journal might state that an addictive substance must have a withdrawal period. however, from a psychological point of view, addictions are broad and difficult to pin down and define. some more precise definitions use information from the field of neuroscience, and analyze what parts of a brain activate when an addictive substance or action is present. but to put it simply, an addiction is something that is positively reinforcing and intrinsically rewarding. posted in: psychology posts interning at a psychiatric hospital by jerryzhu on august 6, 2018 september 8, 2018 leave a comment this week i’m participating in a program held at a psychiatric hospital, we talk with patients and also learn a few techniques for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. psychiatry is the prevention and treatment of mental diseases and disorders. psychology and psychiatry are sometimes confused, but they are quite different. psychology simply studies (mostly the) human mind, in normal or controlled conditions. many psychological concepts are used or incorporated inside of psychiatry. many psychologists do work that is similar to psychiatrists, except more research-oriented. i’ll give more information as the days go. posted in: psychology posts the asch conformity experiments by jerryzhu on july 24, 2018 leave a comment the asch conformity experiments really only show what we all know – when people feel peer pressure, they do the something that they feel is wrong. the experiment puts 8 people in a room – all actors but the test subject. there is a teacher who asks the 8 people very simple questions that are directly logic based, but are more based on perception. for example, the teacher would hold up a picture of three lines and ask which one is the longest. for the first few questions, the actors answer as expected, but later they begin to make obviously wrong answers. due to the seating arrangement, the subject always answers last. what was found? about 80-90% of the time, the subject also answered the same as the other 7. this is not a big surprise, and we’ve most likely been in a situation like it before. however, why do we respond so much to pressure, especially social pressure? personally, i think it’s just fear. a lot of the other experiments we’ve mentioned also use fear, but this one is simply implied. the other 7 people are strangers that you don’t know, and you won’t ever see again, so why does it matter whether you say the same answer as them or not? it might simply be fear of ridicule or violence, since if you point out that they were wrong, they might start to fight with you, or; if you were in fact wrong, you might get ridiculed and ostracized. these fears don’t really make sense, but they exist for a reason. my take on the matter is that related to the prisoner’s dilemma, conforming to others helps you blend in to the group. since life is small repeated social interactions with the same small group of people, if you make a big mistake or stand out in a negative light in front of 7 people, it can harm you a lot in the long run. there is a much lower risk in simply just conforming and moving on, which is what most people do. posted in: psychology posts the milgram obedience experiments by jerryzhu on july 8, 2018 leave a comment stanley milgram, in the 1960s, was contracted by the us army to do some experiments related to obedience. even though almost everybody has ethical standards to not inflict pain on others or other forms of morals like these, stanley milgram investigated this by comparing it to obedience to a higher authority – what would people choose if they were torn between obeying, or going with their best judgement. i can say that 90% of the time, people would say i would not inflict pain on someone just because someone told me to. but, as always, psychology and science as its extension are all based on testing variables. what is the variable here? how far and close the victim and the authority figure are. if you cannot hear or see the person you are punishing, you naturally have much less empathy for them. after all, you don’t know what pain he/she is experiencing. however, if you have to physically touch the victim and forcefully hold them down to administer the punishment, then you are much more likely to quit. the same goes on an inverse method for the authority figure. if the administrator of the test is standing next you, it is much more likely for you to obey and continue. if he/she is not even in the room, the compliance of the subject decreases significantly. stanley milgram drew some vague conclusions from the experiments, which have then been extrapolated into a lot more sinister ideas. one of them is that the nazis should not have been prosecuted for their actions (except adolf hitler, since he is the true leader). since the experiments show that people are highly influenced by what their leaders say, wouldn’t the nazis be affected by this too?
